GEMA sues OpenAI for unlicensed use of songwriters’ works

On 13 November, German music collecting society GEMA announced it had sued generative AI provider OpenAI for the unlicensed use of its members’ (composers, lyricists and music publishers) works in its chatbot application ChatGPT. In addition, GEMA has been particularly active in advocating for a responsible use of generative AI, having also published an AI Charter with 10 basic principles for the use of generative AI on 5 November, and a licensing model for generative AI in September.
