Johan van der Voet

Johan van der Voet (1970) has been working as a media composer for 25 years. Johan has
been making music from an early age. He took classical guitar lessons, after which he studied
music & guitar at the Utrecht Conservatory. After this he followed the Music & Technology
bachelor at the HKU. When Johan was offered his first record deal and publishing contract in
1998, this prompted him to make copyright and contract law the subject of his graduation
thesis. The same year he graduated in applied composition by Rens Machielse (music &
technology program director).
After working in London for several years as a composer and producer, he returned to the
Netherlands, where he opened his own post-production studio.
In addition to his work as a composer, Johan worked for several years as a manager of
various bands, DJ, music teacher, and teacher in A/V and copyright and contract law,
including at the InHolland University of Applied Sciences in The Hague. He still regularly gives
guest lectures on professional practice and music rights at various colleges. Johan is also in
demand as a speaker on copyright and the music industry. He spoke at the ECSA press
conference about Coercive Publishing in Brussels and took part in various panels at
Soundtrack Cologne, ESNS and Buma Music In Motion.
Johan has been representing Dutch composers for years. He has been a board member of
the Music Institute MultiMedia and is co-founder and former chairman of the Professional
Association of Composers MultiMedia. Under his leadership, the BCMM has developed into
an influential professional association, and various associations have merged under the
banner of the BCMM. The professional practice of the members varies greatly: from film and
TV to game or jingle composer. Johan is therefore used to looking at sometimes seemingly
contradictory interests with a transcendent view.
At present Johan is active in the members council of BumaStemra and has been closely
involved in various consultations within the organization since 2006.
