European Film Music Day 2018
The European Film Music Day 2018 will take place on Tuesday, the 15th of May 2018 in the framework of the 71st Cannes Festival.This year again, experts coming from all over Europe and the United States will have the opportunity to discuss key issues at stake.
The three panels will focus on:
• Composing Music for Video Games: New Opportunities;
• Working with Agents and PR Agencies;
• Composing For Film Music: Focus on the Creative Process.
The discussions will be followed by a Happy Hour at La Plage Quinzaine from 18:00 to 20:00.
ECSA Autumn Session 2018 in Belgrade
This year’s ECSA Autumn Session will take place in Belgrade and it will be hosted by the Composers’ Association of Serbia, from 17th-19th of September 2018. Alongside ECSA’s internal meetings, Board meeting and General Assembly, the programme will include the ECCO Concert, followed by the Creators Conference, which this year will put Balkan culture in focus. ECSA Autumn Session meetings and events will take place at the Kolarac Hall, one of the most important culture hubs in Belgrade.
ECCO concert in Belgrade – Call for works
Don’t forget to send us your entries for the ECCO concert which will be performed on the 18th of September 2018 at the Kolarac Hall in Belgrade. The concert will be conducted by Mr. Bojan Sudjic and performed by the RTS Symphony Orchestra. The deadline for submission is Monday 14th of May 2018, 12:00 CET. EU Affairs update – Copyright Directive
The co-legislators are moving fast now. Mr. Axel Voss (EPP) rapporteur on the copyright directive in the European Parliament has set the date for the vote in the JURI committee for either the 20th or 21st of June. The plenary vote will then probably take place in July or latest in September. The Council of the European Union is also almost ready to go into the next phase – the inter-institutional negotiations (also called trilogue) as the Bulgarian Presidency will request the mandate for the negotiations on 27th April 2018 at the COREPER meeting. The proposal of the Presidency is in every aspect weaker than the Commission and even the Parliament proposal. Article 13 that deals with the value gap includes mitigation measures that give platforms the option not to obtain licenses but just take the content down. No major changes have been made to the transparency triangle except for including an unhelpful paragraph in article 14 where an author may need to request information from third parties directly when the first contractual partner has no information on the exploitation of the work. The European Parliament, on the other hand, has not yet finalized the value gap provision in article 13. Articles 14-16 have been more or less finalised. The same provision regarding the information obligation towards third parties has been added as in the Council. On a positive note, it seems very likely that a mechanism to claim back the rights to a work (revocation right) may get introduced into the proposal of the Parliament. It is likely that the inter-institutional negotiations between the Council, Commission and Parliament will start in October 2018.

ECSA is proud signatory of a call uniting more than 60 European organisations in advocating for more funding to the cultural and creative sectors.
Considering culture’s massive contributions to social, economic and artistic development of Europe, we urge the European Union to double the budget directly allocated to its support. Furthermore, as one of its horizontal priorities, we call on the European Commission to make sure other sources of funding (e.g. the Structural and Investment Fund, COSME, education and enlargement/neighbourhood programmes) are accessible to the cultural and creative sectors.

New ECSA staff members
Loredana Bucseneanu (Romania) has joined ECSA as Executive Officer in March 2018. Prior to her appointment at ECSA, Loredana worked on different topics related to European affairs such as SMEs, EU funding, digital agenda etc. Loredana holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in European Economic Policies.
Brussels-native, Louis Absil graduated in Political Science and Cultures and Development studies before working at the International Music Council secretariat for six months. He recently joined ECSA team to assist Laura Gardes in organising and communicating on the European Film Music Day and the Camille Awards until early June. Fluent in French and English, he has an intermediate knowledge of Dutch.

DPA celebrated its 100th anniversary in Copenhagen
DPA, the Danish Songwriters Guild, hosted a celebratory and reflexive event for their 100th anniversary. The mindset was that tradition and continuity are good, but foresight is better. The Danish Minister of Culture and a series of DPA members discussed on the future of Danish music sector, with a focus on music exports, education and how music can help market a city or area.

BASCA Chair Crispin Hunt delivers an address to the EU in Brussels on the growing ‘Value Gap’
For 3 years, BASCA has been campaigning publically for the removal of safe harbour provisions for certain online platforms such Facebook and YouTube. Crispin, along with a delegation of European musicians, songwriters and their representatives met with the European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel in March to press home their case. On the 19th of March, the UNAC Awards granted prizes to a selection of authors and composers that are representative of today’s French diversity and talent. This year, five categories were rewarded: Author-Composer of the song of the year (Juliette Armanet and Antoine Pesle for the song “L’Amour En Solitaire”), Autoproduction (Arnold Turboust and Rico Conning), Repertoire: Author-Composer for the youth (Alain Schneider), Music library composer of the year – i.e. music production (Frédéric Sans), and Tribute to a career (Richard Gotainer). The ceremony, which took place at Sacem, was followed by a cocktail where members of UNAC, award winners and many actors of the French music industry gathered to celebrate.

What is it really like to be a professional author and composer? What are your rights and obligations? “30 Ways To Earn A Living in The Music Industry” was the theme of the conference held by Olivier Delevingne and Wally Badarou at the first UNAC Masterclass organized on the 27th March 2018 in Saint-Germain-En-Laye near Paris. The conference also included a show and will happen all over France on a regular basis.
Second edition of the Gil Family Estates International Soundtrack Composition Prize
There is an incredible opportunity for a young composer to win 50.000€ thanks to the Gil Family Estates International Soundtrack Composition Prize.
What: Creation of a soundtrack to the short film Essence;
Who: composers between 18 and 35 years old;

The winning score will be premièred simultaneously with the screening of the short film on November 15th 2018 at Auditorio Víctor Villegas (Murcia, Spain) during the Film Symphony Orchestra’s concert, where the prize will be awarded.
